DAC Fitness Donates Race Proceeds to Page Robbins Center

Mandy Macri presents Herbie Krisle with DAC Fitness' donation to Page Robbins
in the facility's garden.

DAC Fitness raised more than $1,000 from its third annual DAC New Year's Eve 10k Race, which was held on Friday, December 31st and benefited the Page Robbins Adult Day Care Center. Page Robbins is a Collierville-based nonprofit organization that provides care for those suffering from dementia-related diseases, including Alzheimer's disease.

"DAC Fitness has always been dedicated to giving back to the community," said Robert Creech, president of DAC Fitness. "We're thrilled that through the participation of our members and the community, we were able to once again make a significant donation to such a worthy cause."

In the last three years, DAC Fitness has raised more than $6,000 for Page Robbins.

"Working with DAC Fitness has numerous benefits for our facility and the money raised this year is enough to supplement one full day of service," said Herbie Krisle, Page Robbins' executive director. "In addition to the funds raised, DAC's race emphasizes the importance to get out and move, which has a huge impace on brain health and ultimately, illnesses like dementia and Alzheimer's disease."

DAC Fitness Launches Revamped Biggest Loser!

DAC Fitness has announced the sixth annual DAC's Biggest Loser, which is loosely based on the popular NBC program by the same name. The program, which has been significantly revamped this year, is open to both members and nonmembers and will offer guidance in all areas of a participant's health, including cardiovascular and strength workouts, nutrition and overall wellness. For last year's results, click here and here.

Registration is currently underway at the DAC Fitness Laurelwood, Collierville and Southaven locations, and the eight-week program will begin on February 1.

Participants will work with DAC Fitness trainers and compete in one of three categories - male, female and senior - to see who can lose the most weight over the course of two months. Unlike the television show, no one will be eliminated.

All participants will receive:
- Eight Weeks of Unlimited Team Training (personal training in a group of eight to 10 people)
- Full Health Assessment
- Personalized Nutrition Guidance
- Nutrition and Cardio/Strength Workout Journal
- DAC's Biggest Loser T-Shirt

Costs to participate are as follows:
$99 for current DAC Fitness members currently in a training program
$300 for current DAC Fitness members not in a training program
$400 for nonmembers

In April, one winner from each of the three categories will be announced. All winners, determined by the highest percentage of weight lost, will be awarded a one-year membership to DAC Fitness and $750 in personal training sessions.

To register or for more information, email biggestloser@daclife.com.

Fighting the Sugar Battle

Candy corn, chocolate bars and lollipops - oh my! Candy is EVERYWHERE right now - at the office, in waiting rooms and even (GASP!) in your own home. How do you fight off an intense sugar craving while avoiding the lure of the candy dish?

Don't skip meals. Skipping meals makes you crave sugary, starchy and carbohydrate-rich foods. Eating at least three balanced meals per day that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins will help prevent sugar cravings before they happen.

Drink a glass of water. Studies show that most cravings only last for about 15 minutes before your mind switches to something else. If the craving is still there after drinking water and waiting, try another tip ...

Brush your teeth or swish mouthwash. Giving your mouth a nice, minty refresher is a great way to combat cravings. If you don't have a toothbrush handy, opt for a piece of sugar-free gum. Chewing gum will provide you with that same minty flavor and keep your mind off candy.

Reach for a piece of fruit. Enjoy an apple, pear or other type of fruit instead of that candy bar. Eating fruit will provide the sweet flavor you crave, along with fiber and beneficial nutrients that will keep you satisfied far longer than a piece of candy.

Give in every now and then. Go ahead and have a piece of candy, but eat it slowly. If you don't think one piece will do the trick, try mixing it with something healthy. Options include combining almonds with a few chocolate chips, enjoying a piece of caramel with an apple, or dipping half of a cookie into nonfat or soy milk.

DAC Donates Fitness Balls to Southaven Second Graders

Robert Creech accepts a Certificate of Appreciation from second-grade teacher Rachel Anglin.

Robert Creech, President of DAC, was honored for the club's recent fitness ball donation to Rachel Anglin's second grade class at Greenbrook Elementary in Southaven, Miss.

Anglin, an active DAC Southaven member, wanted something to help her students improve their posture and approached Creech, who was more than happy to make the donation.

"There's a definite childhood obesity problem in Mississippi and combining fitness with learning could be one step in solving this devastating issue," said Creech.

Students will use the fitness balls in place of regular chairs for the remainder of the school year. While they were taken aback by the balance balls at first, students are embracing the change.

All of the second-graders made cards thanking DAC and Robert for the fitness balls.

"I don't want my old chair back," said seven year-old Chaney Wilson. "The balls are much more comfortable."

"I think chairs are so boring now," said Tristan Harlen, a seven year-old from Southaven. "I hear the other kids say, 'Man, the kids in that class are so lucky!'"

The students sit on the balance balls during a normal school day at Greenbrook Elementary.
